Gombe APC gubernatorial hopeful Jamilu Gwamna seeks police and INTERPOL intervention regarding online defamation

Gombe APC gubernatorial candidate Jamilu Gwamna has filed a formal police petition alleging a smear campaign involving cyberbullying and false reports of his arrest.

Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, the Gombe State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, has submitted a formal complaint to the Inspector-General of Police. He claims he is the target of a systemic effort involving cyber-harassment and libel, intended to sabotage his political standing before the 2027 election.

Reports indicate Gwamna wants the Nigeria Police National Cybercrime Centre to investigate the matter. Because some suspects are believed to be located abroad, he has requested assistance from INTERPOL. The petition cites specific social media accounts that falsely reported his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), claims Gwamna insists are entirely fabricated.

Gwamna views these actions as a strategic misinformation plot aimed at undermining his rising popularity in Gombe State. His legal filing requests that law enforcement agencies secure digital data from Meta Platforms, such as IP logs and user details, to help pinpoint and prosecute the individuals and financiers behind the posts.

Ibrahim Shawai, representing the candidate, confirmed the filing and noted that these incidents reflect the growing intensity of the state’s political climate. While the candidate’s base remains optimistic that the investigation will uncover the truth, officials from both the police and the EFCC have yet to issue a statement regarding the petition.
