Umar Yusuf, a leader of the Fulani youth in the Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, has charged security personnel with partnering with local militia groups. He claims these forces participate in fatal raids against herders, the theft of livestock, and the collection of extortion fees to return stolen cattle.
During a Saturday town hall session hosted by the Kautal Pulaaku Fulbe Association of Nigeria, Yusuf stated that security operatives frequently conduct joint operations with Irigwe youth. He asserted that these raids have intensified over time and resulted in the deaths of herders and the seizure of animals. According to Yusuf, captured cattle are often detained in military camps for extended periods, forcing owners to pay significant fines to recover their property despite no evidence of farm encroachment. This ongoing cycle has caused significant financial distress for the Fulani community.
Yusuf also highlighted a specific incident on July 30th at Ancha village. He stated that armed Irigwe members and security agents carried out an unprovoked attack, killing one herder, Muhammadu Rebo, while he was grazing his animals. During the same event, six additional cows were killed and several others were wounded.
