Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes remains confident that his team can secure the Championship title this season, driven by a collective determination to overcome recent controversies. The club faces a four-point deficit at the start of the campaign following the Spygate scandal, which resulted in charges against head coach Tonda Eckert for bringing the sport into disrepute. Despite this hurdle, Downes maintains that the squad is motivated by a desire to rectify past frustrations.
Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, the 27-year-old emphasized that the players and staff have formed a unified front. Downes, who joined the club from West Ham in 2023 and has since reached a century of appearances for the Saints, stated that the group is fully focused on winning the league regardless of the points deduction. The team recently completed a pre-season training camp in Germany, recording victories against Eintracht Braunschweig and Preussen Munster.
As he approaches his fourth season at St Mary’s, Downes noted that he is in peak physical and mental condition. Having contributed six goals and four assists during his tenure, the midfielder credited his development to the coaching staff and expressed excitement regarding his improved tactical awareness.
