Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has encouraged citizens to prioritize purchasing locally manufactured textiles to improve the marketability of domestic products against international competitors.
During a visit to Akwete, Abia State, on Tuesday, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that supporting local fabrics would generate more jobs, specifically benefiting women employed in regional production centers. While touring the hand-weaving facilities, she noted that the federal government remains committed to initiatives that empower women and alleviate poverty.
Mrs. Tinubu expressed her backing for upgrading Akwete’s production site with modern technology. She also requested that the financial aid she allocated to the research and production center be used effectively to assist the female workforce. The First Lady, who received a chieftaincy title from local monarchs, advocated for increased collaboration between Igbo, Yoruba, and other ethnic groups to strengthen the domestic clothing industry.
Abia State APC Woman Leader, Cecilia Erondu, praised the First Lady’s commitment, stating that her support for the textile industry highlights the government’s efforts to combat unemployment. Furthermore, Erondu mentioned that Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu is actively organizing APC members in Abia to secure electoral success in 2027.
