The Federal Government has launched a 30-day emergency operation to repair the Keffi flyover in Nasarawa State after one of its beams collapsed due to a collision with an overloaded trailer.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, who visited the site on Sunday, July 20, 2025, confirmed that the incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, when a truck transporting an excavator struck the flyover. The crash dislodged one beam entirely and caused serious structural damage to two others, resulting in two fatalities and injuring two others.

In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mohammed Ahmed, the minister noted that immediate safety measures were implemented, including the partial closure of the bridge. While the underpass has been cleared, the overpass remains shut pending repairs.

An on-site evaluation was carried out by top officials including Permanent Secretary Olufunso Adebiyi and a team of engineers. During the assessment, Umahi directed CGC Nigeria Limited, the firm currently handling road projects in the FCT to begin the design and production of a replacement beam.

“The new beam will be moulded and installed within 30 days,” the minister said, adding that a structural strength test will be conducted before the beam is reinstalled. He emphasized that the federal government views the situation as an emergency and is mobilizing intervention funds to fast-track the repair, pending full budgetary releases.

President Bola Tinubu has also been briefed on the development and reportedly gave an immediate directive for remedial action.

Umahi extended condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed the ministry’s resolve to ensure such accidents are prevented in future. He was accompanied by senior officials including the Federal Controller of Works in the FCT, Yakubu Usman; Deputy Director of Design and Bridges, Musa Seidu; and Mohammed Ahmed.

The Keffi flyover is a key link between the Federal Capital Territory and North-Central states, making its swift restoration vital for regional mobility.
