Folarin Falana, the Nigerian musician professionally known as Falz, has explained his transition away from active legal practice. The 35-year-old stated that managing his expanding music career alongside his duties as a lawyer became unsustainable.
A law graduate from the University of Reading who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2012, Falz initially found fame with his 2011 track ‘Wahz Up Guy’. He noted on the Behind The Story podcast that while balancing both fields was once feasible, his growing fame created complications in the courtroom.
He recounted a specific instance where a judge recognized him from his entertainment work rather than his legal efforts. Fearing that his public status would invite distractions, cause confusion, or lead clients to doubt his dedication, he opted to focus exclusively on his artistry. He acknowledged that his high profile would likely disrupt court proceedings, making the dual career path untenable.
