A group representing over 400 former Ebonyi State University (EBSU) staff members has petitioned Governor Francis Nwifuru to address their long-standing unpaid pensions and gratuities. The retirees voiced their grievances on Wednesday during a meeting with Rev. Fr. Abraham Nwali, the University Governing Council Chairman, in Abakaliki.
Emeka Ugwoke, the head of the retirees, stated that staff who concluded their service between 2017 and the current year have yet to receive their full entitlements. While some payments were disbursed during the tenure of former Governor David Umahi, many individuals remain unpaid. Retirees like Elder Elebe Michael and James Nwali highlighted that inconsistent payment practices have caused significant financial strain and health issues for many.
Addressing the common misconception that the 2009 salary consolidation included gratuities, the group clarified that the policy only adjusted regular salary components like transport and housing allowances. In response, Rev. Fr. Nwali pledged to organize a meeting with Governor Nwifuru to pursue a final resolution. He noted that the administration’s focus on its People’s Charter of Needs provides hope for a positive outcome and mentioned that legal steps to officially gazette the university are in progress.
