Chimamanda Adichie Responds To Outrage Over Welcoming Twin Sons Via Surrogacy (Video)
Acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has responded to public reactions following her recent revelation that she welcomed twin sons via surrogacy.
Speaking during a live interview with media personality Chude Jidonwo on With Chude Live, Adichie opened up about her decision to be transparent about her family’s journey, and addressed the debate surrounding surrogacy.
Reacting to criticisms that label surrogacy as dehumanising or akin to “renting a woman’s body,” Adichie acknowledged that while surrogacy can be misused, there is a responsible and ethical way to approach it. She emphasized the importance of intention and respect in the process, stating that ethical surrogacy respects the agency and dignity of all involved.
She also pointed out what she described as a contradiction in the views of some critics, noting that many of the same people who oppose surrogacy also champion bodily autonomy. “It’s contradictory to say a woman can do what she wants with her body, but then condemn surrogacy,” she said.
Adichie’s remarks have reignited conversations around reproductive choices, bodily autonomy, and societal expectations of motherhood, particularly within Nigerian and African cultural contexts.
She said: “My boys are so precious to me. And I hated that anything about them would become politicised – so on the one hand I thought ‘I wish I hadn’t talked about it’, but on the other hand there is no way I am going to lie.”
She continued: “I am hoping that if anything good comes out of this, it would be that more women are less ashamed of talking about reaching motherhood through non-traditional means. Because our society is so judgemental, and I don’t think that that is good for anybody.“But, you know, my daughter and my babies are the greatest gift I’ve been given, so ZERO REGRETS.”
