Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has openly declared that he lacks confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s leadership. This follows the abandonment of Infantino’s controversial proposal to introduce private investment into the World Cup, a move that sparked significant international outrage. Carney, whose nation served as a co-host for the 2026 World Cup, noted that Infantino’s decision to bypass senior management when drafting this plan should be enough to end his time at the helm of football’s global governing body.
Speaking in Toronto, Carney emphasized that such management practices are unacceptable for any organization, especially one with international responsibilities. The criticism comes as Infantino faces mounting pressure to resign, with even his own organization expressing dissatisfaction. On Wednesday, the FIFA leader held emergency meetings in Morocco, the future host of the 2030 tournament, to address the escalating crisis. This turmoil marks a stark contrast to the recent success of the 48-team 2026 World Cup, which was hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Furthermore, UEFA has also officially stated that it no longer trusts Infantino’s direction.
