Borno Officials Address Security Concerns Over Reintegrating Former Terrorists

The Borno State government is addressing public anxiety regarding the potential return of rehabilitated terrorists to extremist groups after their reintegration.

Authorities maintain that the current deradicalisation process includes a solemn oath taken on the Quran, which they believe acts as a powerful deterrent against future violence.

Zuwaira Gambo, the state Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, explained during a recent television interview that the oath holds significant weight for participants. She emphasized that once former members surrender to authorities, they are considered outcasts by their former groups, leaving them with little incentive to return to the bush.

Despite these assurances, Gambo noted that the initiative faces substantial hurdles, particularly regarding the funding required to house, clothe, and educate the large volume of participants.

This initiative follows the graduation of 744 individuals under the federal government’s Operation Safe Corridor program, which drew participants from Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, and Kano.

The reintegration process has sparked national debate, with critics questioning the lack of transparency and the potential impact on victims of extremist violence.

Afam Osigwe, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, argued that reintegration efforts must address the needs of victims rather than appearing to favor perpetrators.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International’s Nigeria Country Director, Isa Sanusi, echoed calls for greater government accountability. Sanusi urged officials to provide clearer information regarding the specific backgrounds and actions of those being reintegrated to ensure public trust and security.
