Citizens living in the Fego and Ruga Maikasuwa districts of the Gwana Emirate in Bauchi State are urging authorities to boost security measures. This appeal follows a violent raid by armed men that resulted in six injuries and the theft of livestock.
The raid began at midnight on Saturday and persisted until Sunday morning, spreading panic through an area that had been showing signs of stability. Sheikh Yusuf Bello Gafakan, representing local Islamic scholars, noted that the gunmen targeted Ruga Maikasuwa, an area hit multiple times recently. Although previous government intervention had allowed displaced families to return, this new surge of violence threatens that progress.
Six victims are currently hospitalized at the Gombe Specialist Hospital. The attackers successfully fled with stolen cattle and household items. Local defenders attempted to resist, but the criminals retreated with the loot before they could be captured. It remains unconfirmed if any residents were kidnapped.
Sheikh Yusuf highlighted the strategic vulnerability of Gwana, which shares borders with five states and features dense forests like Yankari that serve as criminal strongholds. He believes a permanent military presence is necessary for long-term safety. SP Nafiu Abubakar, spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police, stated that he has not yet received a formal report but promised to investigate the matter through the local Divisional Police Officer.
