Atletico Madrid secure £34.2m agreement for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero

Atletico Madrid have agreed a £34.2m deal to sign Cristian Romero from Tottenham, with Spurs including a 15% sell-on clause.

Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement to acquire Cristian Romero from Tottenham for a fee of £34.2 million, or 40 million euros. As part of the transfer agreement, Tottenham will hold onto a 15 per cent sell-on clause for the 28-year-old Argentine international. This move makes Romero the fourth summer arrival for the Spanish side.

While Arsenal had expressed interest in the defender, Tottenham avoided offloading their captain to their fierce north London rivals. Romero departs the club after five seasons, having accumulated 156 appearances and 13 goals since his initial 2021 loan move from Atalanta. He was a cornerstone of the Tottenham defense, serving as captain during a season where the team narrowly secured their Premier League status.

The move comes as Atletico Madrid look to bolster their squad under Diego Simeone following a fourth-place finish in La Liga. Including this deal, the club is poised to exceed £100 million in summer spending. Meanwhile, Tottenham faces further roster changes, with Djed Spence reportedly in advanced negotiations for a move to Inter Milan.
