Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell confirmed the sentencing on Monday, August 18. Dennis had earlier pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his 37-year-old wife, a mother of two, outside a Home Depot in north Phoenix on September 9, 2024.
“This wasn’t just a violent crime, it was an act of betrayal carried out by someone who should have been a source of safety, not fear,” Mitchell said in a statement. “There is something especially cruel about a murder that takes place within a relationship built on trust.”
Police reports revealed that Dennis attacked his wife while she sat in the driver’s seat of a red Prius. Witnesses who heard her cries for help discovered her with multiple stab wounds and called for aid.
As officers tended to her injuries, Grant made a dying declaration, naming Dennis as her attacker. She was rushed to hospital but later pronounced dead.
Dennis fled the scene on foot after grabbing a bag from the car but later called 911, confessed to the stabbing, and directed officers to the weapon. Authorities said the couple had recently married but were in the midst of discussing an annulment.
