Anambra Police Rescue Week-Old Infant Sold for N1.7 Million; Four Suspects Arrested
Police operatives from the Anambra State Command’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area, successfully rescued a one-week-old baby girl who had been illegally sold for a total price of N1.7 million.
Confirming the disturbing event, State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, announced the arrest of four women suspected to be involved in the illicit transaction. Those detained include the infant’s mother, who reportedly received N350,000, and three other women: Elizabeth Okafor (62), Esther Nweke (48), and Ngozi Maanfa (45).
The police action was initiated based on intelligence reports, which led the team to storm a premises known as “Mama Maternity” in Ifite-Awkuzu, Oyi LGA.
In response to the severity of the case, Commissioner of Police (CP) Ikioye Orutugu has directed that the matter be immediately transferred to the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a thorough and discreet investigation.
