The passing of Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, a distinguished Nigerian statesman and the Sardaunan Sokoto, has been announced. His family confirmed the news on Thursday in Abuja.
During the administration of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Alhaji held the position of Finance Minister from 1990 to 1991. His extensive public service record also includes terms as the Minister of State for Budget and Planning in 1988, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
Throughout his career, he maintained a reputation as an accomplished administrator, contributing significantly to both civil service and corporate landscapes. Beyond his government roles, he was deeply respected as the Sardaunan Sokoto. Following his appointment in 1990, where he succeeded Sir Ahmadu Bello, he served as a vital link between traditional leadership and the Nigerian public.
