Algeria Secure 2-0 Victory Against Senegal in WAFCON 2026 Opener

Algeria started the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Senegal, thanks to goals from Marine Dafeur and Melissa Bethi.

Algeria claimed a 2-0 win over Senegal to begin their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign. The North African side found the net in both halves of the competitive match.

During a balanced first half, both squads struggled to find an opening. Eventually, Bristol City’s Marine Dafeur converted a penalty kick to put Algeria ahead just three minutes prior to halftime.

Led by coach Farid Benstiti, the Algerian team maintained their defensive structure until Melissa Bethi secured the victory with a goal in the 88th minute. This result places Algeria at the top of Group A for now. Later this evening, tournament hosts Morocco are scheduled to face the Harambee Starlets to complete the group’s first round of matches.
