Music executive and artist Akon recently shed light on his 2008 decision to sign Nigerian talent Wizkid rather than Canadian rapper Drake. During an interview with The Shade Room, Akon noted that financial constraints were the primary reason behind this choice.
At the time, Drake was still an up-and-coming artist without his signature sound. Akon revealed that Drake asked for a $1 million signing fee, which he found prohibitive. Instead, Akon partnered with Banky W and his Empire Mate Entertainment label to bring Wizkid into the fold.
While Akon emphasized that he provided the resources to introduce Wizkid to the American audience, he was quick to acknowledge Banky W’s role in discovering and developing the young artist’s potential. Akon recalled visiting Nigeria, meeting Wizkid through Banky W, and immediately recognizing the artist’s star quality.
