U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) officials have sounded the alarm regarding a massive spike in illicit drug shipments throughout the continent, noting that narcotics trafficking volume has expanded by more than six times over the past two years.
Brig. Gen. Paul Filcek, the AFRICOM Director of Logistics, shared these findings during an online briefing at the 2026 Africa Logistics and Communications Symposium in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Filcek warned that the sudden surge in drug smuggling, combined with issues like human trafficking, represents a substantial danger to the security and financial stability of African nations.
To combat these issues, Filcek advocated for closer cooperation between African countries and global allies, specifically highlighting the need for resilient communication tools and better supply chain infrastructure. He emphasized that security forces require the ability to move personnel and assets quickly across challenging geography to address these threats.
The symposium, hosted in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Defence, saw record-breaking attendance with participants from 40 nations and 27 private firms. Filcek concluded that modern military success is built on the tight coordination between logistical support and sophisticated communication technology.
