Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has called for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step down following the decision to freeze the Osun State Government’s bank account at First Bank. Adebayo issued this demand while addressing the media in Abuja on Thursday.
The controversy emerged when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) froze the state account just days before the scheduled August 15, 2026, governorship election. The agency justified the move by citing suspicious financial activities. Following this, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced that President Tinubu had ordered the EFCC to lift the freeze.
While some have demanded the resignation of EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede due to this incident, Adebayo disagrees. He asserts that the responsibility ultimately lies with the President. According to Adebayo, the EFCC operates in a challenging environment, and he lacks evidence to support blaming the chairman. He insists that Tinubu is the official at fault, stating that the responsibility for the administration’s actions rests solely with him.
