Big Issue vendors across the UK are facing a significant drop in magazine sales as severe heatwaves discourage pedestrians from lingering outdoors. Managing director Catherine Parsons reports that during weeks marked by extreme heat, sales have fallen by an average of 20% compared to previous years. Regions like the West Midlands and Wales experienced particularly sharp declines of 34% and 33% respectively during June’s record-breaking heat.
For those selling the magazine, who often face financial instability or homelessness, this reduction in foot traffic directly threatens their ability to cover basic needs such as rent and food. London-based vendor George Anderson noted that potential customers avoid staying in the sun to talk, preferring to remain near air conditioning. Anderson, who has been with the organization since 2019, explained that the heat makes it difficult to maintain regular working hours, forcing many to cut their days short.
In response to these conditions, Big Issue management is distributing sunscreen, water, and hats to help vendors remain safe. However, Parsons emphasized that the financial impact is immediate when workers are forced to retreat from the sun for their own safety. While staff remain hopeful that sales will recover as temperatures drop, the current summer climate poses a persistent economic challenge for those relying on these earnings for their livelihood.
