A bitter conflict has emerged in Ebonyi State between the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the state government. The parties are clashing over claims that Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are being illegally acquired to manipulate the outcome of the 2027 general elections.
The PDP, represented by Publicity Secretary Darlington Onwe, claims that the ruling APC and the state government are orchestrating a plot to frame opposition members for illegal PVC procurement. Onwe argues this is a manufactured excuse intended to justify the harassment and detention of PDP supporters. He linked these developments to previous rhetoric from the Governor, who allegedly vowed to consume opposition parties in the state.
Onwe further highlighted past instances of violence, specifically citing an attack in Ezza South Local Government Area where political thugs allegedly targeted a PDP gathering and assaulted journalists from the Nigeria Union of Journalists. He maintained that the PDP remains a law-abiding organization and views these accusations as a threat to constitutional rights and democratic principles.
In response, Sunday Nwambam, Special Assistant to Governor Francis Nwifuru on Inter-Party Affairs, dismissed the accusations as entirely groundless. He stated that the Governor is committed to fostering a fair political climate in Ebonyi and accused the PDP of engaging in juvenile political tactics. Nwambam claimed the opposition is spreading these rumors to distract from their own alleged plans regarding the illicit purchase of voter cards.
