Turki Alalshikh, a Saudi government official and prominent boxing promoter, has officially pulled out of his planned investment in Derby County. Although the proposal had gained approval from both the English Football League and the Independent Football Regulator, Alalshikh informed the club on Monday that he would not proceed with acquiring a stake.
Following this development, Derby County issued a statement confirming that the club is no longer for sale and will continue to be backed by Clowes Developments. In a social media post, Alalshikh explained that while he respects the regulatory review process, the time taken for approval left insufficient opportunity to properly prepare the club for the upcoming season. He expressed an openness to future discussions.
The Independent Football Regulator noted that its assessment was completed within 55 days, well under the 90-day statutory limit, and had reached a preliminary decision to approve the bid. The regulator conducts thorough checks on financial viability and background integrity for all potential owners.
The potential deal had previously drawn scrutiny from human rights groups, including Amnesty International. These organizations have frequently criticized Alalshikh and the Saudi government regarding allegations of sportswashing, pointing to concerns over human rights, the treatment of women, and the use of the death penalty. Alalshikh, who previously owned the Spanish club Almeria, remains a significant figure in Saudi state entertainment.
