Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has announced that his government is preparing to shut down several camps for Internally Displaced Persons. This shift is possible because security in the region has stabilized, prompting many individuals to return to their original homes.
The governor shared this update while meeting with the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Presidential Media Team, headed by Bayo Onanuga. The delegation visited Benue to review infrastructure developments throughout the state’s 23 Local Government Areas. Alia attributed the growing sense of peace to active federal interventions and bolstered security protocols.
Data from local leaders and security agencies indicate that many residents are choosing to go back to their communities to resume agricultural work. While 15 camps were originally established in response to past violence, the government is now collaborating with entities like the United Nations and the International Organisation for Migration to ensure this transition is permanent. Alia emphasized that the state is focused on sustainable safety so that families can successfully rebuild their houses and restore their livelihoods without the threat of renewed displacement.
