A High Court in Zamfara State has handed down death sentences to Abdulshakur Tukur and Abdullahi Buba. The two individuals were convicted of conspiring to kill and murdering Ahmad Yakubu. Chief Judge Kulu Isa Aliyu delivered the ruling after examining all testimony and evidence provided by both sides.
The court determined that the homicide took place on December 13, 2021, in the Barakallahu district of Gusau. Under Section 221 of the Penal Code, the men received the death penalty for culpable homicide, and they were also given a seven-year prison term for criminal conspiracy under Section 97 of the same code.
Prosecutor Kabiru Samaila expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the evidence was sufficient to prove guilt. Conversely, defense attorney Zakari Abubakar remarked that the proceedings were orderly but indicated that his legal team would review the ruling to determine if an appeal is warranted.
The court also addressed other parties involved. Charges against Aminu Baba were dropped following his death while in custody. Additionally, Ahmad Tukur was cleared of all accusations due to a lack of evidence. The case originally gained significant media interest in 2022 due to the nature of the charges, which included conspiracy, homicide, and cannibalism.
