The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has officially denied any association with Nwaogu Ihechimere Ezeakolam, a retired Department of State Services (DSS) officer recently charged in an Abuja Federal High Court. Ezeakolam faces a four-count charge for allegedly providing support to the group, a violation of the 2022 Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act.
Speaking for the group, spokesman Emma Powerful clarified that Ezeakolam holds no position or membership within their organization. IPOB challenged the intelligence agency to produce concrete evidence regarding his recruitment, command structure, or specific role within the group, rather than relying on unsubstantiated claims on a charge sheet.
IPOB expressed significant doubt regarding the decision to remand the former operative at the Kuje Correctional Centre. The group suggested that this arrangement might serve as a strategic effort to plant an intelligence asset within the prison for surveillance purposes. They argued that given the individual’s background, this case warrants increased vigilance.
The group described this incident as part of a recurring pattern where the security agency fabricates stories involving the movement whenever public focus turns toward the legal challenges of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu. They demanded that the DSS provide verifiable proof of their claims in court while urging authorities to stop using the group to distract from other security issues, such as recent abductions in Enugu State.
