The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) has decided to push back its 21-day warning strike ultimatum by three weeks. This extension is intended to allow more time for productive talks and a balanced settlement with the federal government.
The announcement followed an Emergency National Executive Council meeting held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and was signed by NAMDA President Dr. Nosa Lancy Orhue and Acting Secretary General Prof. Aniekan Peter. The union stated that if all pending matters are not settled by August 31, 2026, they will initiate a three-day warning strike.
NAMDA has instructed its national branches to conduct at least two meetings and sensitization events during this window to ensure members are prepared for potential industrial action. Branches are required to report their mobilization progress back to the national secretariat.
While the union expressed frustration over the government’s slow pace in finalizing agreements, they acknowledged the mediation efforts of the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS) and other stakeholders. Furthermore, the association highlighted concerns regarding the lack of focus on medical training in Nigeria, especially given the current shortage of practitioners and the ongoing emigration of professionals.
Finally, the council emphasized its commitment to securing all approved benefits for medical and dental lecturers and reminded its membership to follow the directives issued during the meeting.
