Robert Bush, the former operator of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, has sent a written apology to families affected by his criminal failures. The 48-year-old was sentenced to 20 years in prison at Hull Crown Court after authorities discovered 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes at his premises during a March 2024 raid.
In the letter, Bush claimed he took responsibility for his actions and expressed regret for the uncertainty caused to grieving families. However, the message has been met with fury. Jasmine Beverley, whose stillborn son Sunny was found in a paper bag at the facility nearly two years after his death, described the correspondence as infuriating. She noted that her memories of her child are permanently scarred by the mismanagement of his remains.
Tristan Essex, whose grandmother Jessie Stockdale was among those left unburied, labeled the apology as mocking and insincere. He suggested the tone was self-centered and lacked genuine remorse. Bush pleaded guilty to 67 offenses, including multiple counts of preventing a lawful burial and theft from charities. Prosecutors characterized his operation at the Hessle Road site as chaotic and distressing for the community.
