Twenty-four legislators in the Ondo State House of Assembly have rejected any attempt by the All Progressive Congress leadership to force the embattled Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, back into favor. The lawmakers are demanding Oladiji’s resignation or his removal due to claims of financial impropriety totaling 44 million naira related to the OSOPADEC budget adjustments.
Olatunji Fabiyi, the chairman of the House Committee on Information, clarified that while the impeachment process is currently paused to allow for party mediation, the lawmakers remain firm in their resolve. He explained that although they are waiting for the party to provide guidance, they will not accept any outcome that forces the Speaker upon them against their will. The group also established a four-member committee to review the financial records of the Assembly.
Fabiyi dismissed allegations of bribery, asserting that the members have not been influenced by the state government. He emphasized that the legislative body remains focused on its constitutional duties, including addressing constituency projects and urgent concerns like regional flooding. The Assembly has adjourned for two weeks, at which point members will reconvene to further deliberate on the status of the leadership crisis.
