The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has implemented a ‘Post No Debit’ restriction on a First Bank account belonging to the Osun State government. This action occurs just 10 days before the scheduled gubernatorial election.
Reports indicate that the account is primarily used to process salary payments for state employees. Governor Ademola Adeleke recently claimed the agency intended to freeze state accounts to interfere with the upcoming August 15 vote, an accusation the government has now reiterated.
Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, stated that this move is a deliberate attempt to sabotage state functions during the election cycle. Governor Adeleke further contended that the commission lacks the legal standing to restrict a state government’s financial resources.
An anonymous official confirmed the restriction is active and noted that the governor plans to hold a media briefing soon. The EFCC has yet to release an official statement explaining the motivation behind this financial freeze.
