The administration at the University of Calabar (Unical) has instructed 214 second-year law students to vacate the Faculty of Law and return to their prior departments. This directive follows a meeting on August 5, 2026, involving university leadership, faculty heads, and student representatives from LAWSAN-UCC.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Offiong Offiong clarified that of the 435 students currently in the LLB II program, only 221 were officially admitted into the faculty. The remaining students had transferred from other academic disciplines. The university warned that these unauthorized transfers would prevent the students from eventually attending the Nigerian Law School.
To facilitate the transition, the university has temporarily deactivated the accounts of the 214 affected students to allow them to migrate back to their original programs. As compensation, the school is offering a full refund of the 2025/2026 tuition fees and will cover the tuition costs for the 2026/2027 academic year in their newly reinstated departments.
The Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, Unical Chapter, issued a formal statement to relay these updates. While acknowledging the distress this situation causes, the association advised students to remain composed while the transition process is finalized.
