Organizers of the Tour de France Femmes Avec Zwift have begun inspecting participants’ clothing to ensure no one is seeking an unfair aerodynamic edge. Concerns arose following reports that some cyclists might be using bra padding as makeshift fairings to improve their efficiency by as much as one second per kilometer.
The race organizer, ASO, issued a formal statement addressing these claims. They confirmed that officials are monitoring for any “non-essential” additions to cycling kits that could alter a rider’s body shape. This enforcement aligns with UCI regulation 1.3.032, which restricts items that modify a rider’s morphology. Under these rules, competitors could face fines of nearly £200 or total disqualification if found in violation.
Dutch media outlet Wielerflits noted that similar tactics have been spotted in previous events, including the Paris 2024 Olympics. Aerodynamic efficiency is highly prioritized in cycling, particularly during individual time trials, where minimal adjustments to gear or posture can significantly impact race times. However, experts like Koen de Kort from Lidl-Trek point out the difficulty in enforcement, noting the challenge of distinguishing between necessary support and intentional aerodynamic manipulation.
