Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has praised President Bola Tinubu for sanctioning a salary raise of 30 to 80 per cent for Nigerian military members. Lawan, who leads the Senate Committee on Defence, noted that this decision highlights the President’s dedication to soldier welfare and national security.
Beginning September 1, 2026, the updated pay scale grants an 80 per cent rise for junior ranks, a 50 per cent hike for mid-level officers, and a 30 per cent boost for generals. This shift increases the annual military wage expenditure from N660 billion to N924 billion, impacting approximately 250,000 service members.
Lawan stated that this investment will empower troops to better combat kidnapping, terrorism, and banditry. He encouraged service members to show increased dedication and professionalism in return. Furthermore, he advocated for tighter cooperation and information sharing between the Army, Navy, and Air Force to foster a more cohesive defensive force.
The senator confirmed that the Senate Committee on Defence remains committed to securing necessary funding for military operations. He concluded by thanking the President for acknowledging the sacrifices made by those tasked with protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty.
