The incident occurred on July 30, only one night after the 34-year-old secured his 21st Commonwealth Games medal, making him the most decorated athlete in the history of the event. While breaking this record, a fire broke out in his building and rapidly engulfed his residence of over ten years, leaving nothing behind.
Tragically, the blaze resulted in the death of a 93-year-old neighbor. Le Clos expressed his profound grief via social media, extending his condolences to the victim’s family and offering support to his fellow residents whose properties were also impacted. The Olympian, best known for his 2012 defeat of Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly, has initiated a fundraising effort to assist those displaced by the catastrophe.
Le Clos, who began his Commonwealth career in 2010, now holds a total of 21 medals from the Games. His career highlights include four Olympic medals and 16 world titles. As he processes the personal loss of his home, he emphasized the importance of community support during such difficult times.
