Anxiety has emerged within the Nigerian financial industry following Zenith Bank’s admission that cybercriminals obtained unauthorized access to sensitive customer details. The institution provided this confirmation in an official customer notification issued on Wednesday, addressing mounting reports from users who previously signaled suspicious activity regarding their accounts.
The bank stated it has initiated a formal investigation into the security event. Officials characterized the incident as an element of a wider, international cyber-offensive that has compromised various organizations across multiple industries. The breach primarily involved contact details such as email addresses and phone numbers. This event follows a pattern of recent digital attacks in Nigeria, including earlier incidents this year involving Remita, Sterling Bank, and Providus Bank. Although the federal government promised an inquiry into these data vulnerabilities back in April, official findings have yet to be disclosed to the public.
