The Ebonyi State Ministry of Capital City Development and Urban Planning has identified a decaying one-story structure in Abakaliki for destruction due to major safety risks. Residents living there were previously given three weeks to leave after officials determined the building was unsafe. Chief Richard Ugo Idike, the commissioner in charge, confirmed during a site visit that the grace period has passed and the building will be brought down this week.
This action follows an understanding between the state and the property owner, intended to prevent a fatal collapse. Commissioner Idike noted that prioritizing public safety remains the government’s primary goal. The ministry team also inspected a second damaged building on Liberty Street that is nearing total failure. Its owners were ordered to clear the property, and tenants were instructed to move out within 21 days.
Despite clear signs of structural failure, including segments that have already crumbled, families and children continue to reside in these hazardous locations. Permanent Secretary Mrs. Martina Obya and other ministry officials joined the inspection to monitor compliance with regulations established after initial warnings were issued on July 7, 2026. Commissioner Idike highlighted the dangers of staying in such buildings and called on property owners to perform consistent maintenance. The state government intends to continue enforcing these standards to ensure a safer urban environment.
