Radio host Greg James mourns the loss of his pet dog Barney

BBC Radio 1 host Greg James is mourning the death of his chocolate labrador Barney, whom he adopted in 2019.

BBC Radio 1 personality Greg James is grieving the passing of his chocolate labrador, Barney. The dog, who was a frequent subject of anecdotes on the Breakfast show, was put to sleep in the garden of the home James shares with his wife, author Bella Mackie.

Sharing the news on Instagram, James described himself as being overwhelmed by sadness, noting that he struggled to stop crying after the loss. He expressed appreciation for the public’s support but requested privacy for his family during this difficult time. Following the news, fellow broadcaster Charlie Hedges stepped in to host the radio show as James took a short leave.

The couple adopted Barney from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2019. Over the years, the dog received care from veterinary specialist Professor Noel Fitzpatrick for arthritic joints. Barney was also a source of encouragement for James during his 1,000km tandem cycling challenge for Comic Relief earlier this year, appearing in a video that kept the presenter motivated.
