The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has ramped up its safety and environmental initiatives for waterfront residents in the Federal Capital Territory. With the rainy season causing water levels to surge, the risk of pollution and navigation accidents has become a major concern. The Authority’s Abuja office recently visited the Abaji Area Council to educate locals on proper boat operation and environmental conservation.
Hajia Aisha Eri, the Area Manager, thanked the local residents for their support. She emphasized that NIWA remains dedicated to securing inland routes and protecting those who rely on them for their survival. She also called on boat pilots and community figures to follow established safety protocols to minimize mishaps during this volatile weather period.
Alhaji Adamu Aguma, the Emir of Kwali, expressed appreciation for the program and promised that local traditional leaders would assist in enforcing these safety rules. This outreach is part of a broader national plan initiated by Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, who has ordered consistent engagement with riverine populations.
Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, the Acting Managing Director of NIWA, has instructed all regional offices to prioritize these safety campaigns to decrease the frequency of boat accidents across the country.
