A faction within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has reached out to the National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), to intervene in a growing standoff with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The party claims that INEC is unfairly blocking its candidates by refusing to provide the access code required for the nomination portal.
In a petition filed by their legal representatives, O.I.B. Oyewale & Co., the party argues that it followed all legal protocols, including conducting INEC-monitored primary elections and submitting the required membership records. The faction asserts that there is no legal basis for their exclusion and that INEC’s failure to act serves as a form of administrative disenfranchisement.
The NNPP maintains that despite its full compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, INEC has not provided the necessary credentials to upload candidate information. They argue that this obstruction threatens the fairness of the democratic process and may be influenced by external interests looking to weaken the party. The petition emphasizes that pending litigation involving other factions should not justify denying the party its statutory right to participate in the elections.
The party has requested that the National Peace Committee urge INEC to review its records and grant the required access immediately. This latest effort follows a prior warning issued to the commission on July 16, 2026, regarding potential legal action. Meanwhile, the NNPP has been navigating internal leadership changes, with Dr. Agbo Major recently announcing that his wing of the party has already commenced the upload process for its candidates following the restoration of the party’s official logo on the INEC platform.
