Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has voiced strong opposition to the current economic approach of President Bola Tinubu’s government. Speaking through a representative, Hon. Babatunde Tijani, during an Allied Peoples Movement (APM) event in Abeokuta, the Governor argued that the simultaneous removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira have exacerbated poverty and living costs across the country.
Makinde emphasized that while structural economic adjustments might be necessary, they should have been preceded by safety nets to protect citizens. He highlighted that many Nigerians now struggle to afford essential goods, such as food and fuel, contrasting this reality with the government’s rhetoric about economic progress. The Governor called for a total overhaul of national security and economic governance, noting that public safety has declined significantly.
At the same event, APM Chairman Sanyaolu Abayomi challenged the government’s claims of currency stabilization, pointing out that the high cost of living remains unchanged for the average person. He urged citizens to prepare for the 2027 elections by securing their voter cards and considering political alternatives.
Furthermore, Comrade Sunday Oginni, representing a coalition of opposition parties including the NNPP and Labour Party, announced a strategic alliance aimed at ending long-standing political dominance in Ogun State. He warned residents against accepting bribes and cautioned against external political influence, declaring that the coalition is committed to offering a fresh direction for the state.
