Alexandra Eala has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first player from the Philippines to secure a WTA singles title. She claimed victory at the Washington Open after defeating the tournament’s top seed, Jessica Pegula. The final match, originally scheduled for Sunday, was delayed until Monday due to inclement weather in Washington D.C.
Pegula, currently ranked third globally, took the opening set 6-4 before play was suspended for the day due to storms. When the match resumed on Monday, Eala demonstrated remarkable momentum, conceding only three more games throughout the remainder of the contest. The 21-year-old clinched the trophy with a final score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, utilizing a strong left-handed serve and aggressive baseline play.
This triumph elevates Eala to a career-best ranking of 20th in the world, a significant climb from her position outside the top 50 at the start of the year. During the trophy ceremony, Eala expressed her gratitude, noting that reaching this stage was a major career accomplishment. Pegula, who previously won the Washington title in 2019 and 2021, praised Eala’s progress and her influence on the sport. This victory marks Eala’s fifth consecutive win against a top-10 opponent, following her successes against players such as Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina.
