Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, has asserted that religious bodies should maintain their role in offering moral guidance while the elected government focuses on its constitutional duty to administer the nation. This statement follows intense public interest surrounding the July 28 meeting at the Presidential Villa between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria.
The discourse intensified after Cardinal John Onaiyekan revealed that President Tinubu and the bishops held differing perspectives on the state of the economy, security, and the political landscape. While the bishops urged the administration to take stronger action against rising living costs and insecurity, President Tinubu maintained that his government is making consistent progress.
Mumuni, an expert in security matters, emphasized that religious leaders play a vital role in democracy by advocating for the public interest. He noted that their input should be viewed as constructive rather than antagonistic. However, he also stressed that the government holds the sole constitutional mandate for policy implementation and governance.
According to Mumuni, the long-standing economic and security difficulties facing Nigeria require collaborative efforts from all sectors. He also highlighted that many of these structural issues were inherited, but stressed that citizens have every right to expect effective governance from the current administration.
