The Adeleke Campaign Organisation has formally complained to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding the alleged abuse of police authority in Osun State leading up to the governorship vote. Campaign spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi urged the Inspector-General of Police to confirm that law enforcement will maintain neutrality and guarantee public safety during the exercise.
During a visit to the NHRC headquarters in Abuja, Olajengbesi highlighted reports of violence, claiming that 36 lives have been lost in the state. The campaign group requested a thorough investigation into these deaths. Additionally, the organization voiced alarm over the detention of several residents, noting that while some were freed following public backlash, others remain in custody.
The petition specifically addressed the case of Accord Party candidate for Ijesa South, Popoola Alabama. He was taken into custody in Ilesa during a political event and moved to Abuja. Authorities sought a magistrate court order to hold him on charges related to firearms and robbery, though the campaign insists no incriminating evidence was found. The organization is demanding his immediate release or a formal trial.
Ultimately, the Adeleke camp is calling for non-partisan behavior from security forces to ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process. As of now, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued a response to these claims.
