This facility, much like many across Nigeria, acts as a critical lifeline for families dealing with health anxieties, pregnancy, or childhood vaccinations. Despite systemic challenges including limited resources and staffing shortages, the staff here manages to provide compassionate care that leaves patients feeling hopeful.
Yohanna Kusau has emerged as a beacon of dedication within this system. During a community engagement visit by the PAC4PHC project in Toga Sarki, residents frequently praised his impact on local health services. Born in 1974 in Kaduna State, Kusau initially pursued journalism before transitioning to health technology. After graduating in 1999, he navigated employment difficulties by running a pharmacy, which allowed him to remain integrated within the healthcare sector until he formally joined it in 2008.
Kusau’s approach is defined by his belief that attentive listening is the most essential form of medicine. He prioritizes patient confidentiality and proactive communication, which has helped foster immense public trust in the facilities where he serves. His commitment to professional growth is evident; he continued his education, earning a B.Sc. in Public Health in 2023 at the age of forty-nine. He maintains that staying informed is necessary to prevent failing those he serves.
Throughout his career, including postings in Burun, Pyakasa, Toga Sarki, and now Kabusa, Kusau has been recognized by colleagues as a leader who models integrity, discipline, and empathy. He focuses on efficient resource management and mentorship, teaching staff how to treat patients with genuine respect. His colleagues and the public view his work as a standard for what primary healthcare should represent.
Kusau was honored as a 2026 PHC Champion through the KNOW. TRUST. GO. Campaign led by the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency. He insists that he is simply performing his duty, hoping that his commitment inspires others to elevate the overall quality of care across Nigeria.
