Ahmed Sanusi, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, confirmed that four officers are currently being held in custody. These individuals are accused of illegally demanding 53,000 Naira from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
During a media briefing held at the FCT Police Command headquarters in Abuja, Commissioner Sanusi explained that the incident took place during an unsanctioned stop-and-search activity. The officers had deserted their official posts to set up an unauthorized checkpoint near the Banex area in Wuse.
The officers targeted the ICPC chairman, unaware of his position. They forced him to visit a nearby Point of Sale (POS) operator to withdraw the funds. After collecting the money and covering transaction fees, the group divided the cash among themselves. The victim subsequently filed a formal report with the command, leading to the arrests.
Commissioner Sanusi labeled the actions of the officers as criminal behavior. He promised a thorough investigation, stating that those found guilty would face strict disciplinary measures, including potential dismissal. He also encouraged FCT residents to report any instances of police misconduct immediately by calling the command’s emergency lines.
