Members of the Special Intervention Squad and the Intelligence Response Team stated that their commitment to rescuing 44 kidnapped students and teachers in Oriire was fueled by viewing the victims as their own children. The mission, conducted alongside military and security partners, resulted in the tragic death of Sergeant John Jerome Mbena and left several other officers injured.
Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu honored the fallen officer during a reception for the team on Friday, praising their courage and successful coordination. The IG confirmed that injured officers are receiving medical care and that the force remains dedicated to supporting their welfare and the family of the deceased sergeant.
Highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation, the police chief emphasized that no single security branch is superior to another. He urged the public to assist in national security by reporting suspicious activities, noting that collaboration is essential to curbing crime. Officer SP Mohammed Abduramaan echoed these sentiments, affirming that the team acted out of a duty to protect their own, seeing the rescue as a fulfillment of their core training and responsibilities.
