Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has delivered a stern warning to African Alliance Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. The court mandated that Sowore must proceed with his defense against defamation charges brought by the Department of State Service. The prosecution alleges that Sowore defamed President Bola Tinubu via social media.
This judicial warning stems from the absence of Sowore’s legal team, including lead counsel Olumide Fusika and Reuben Adakole, during the most recent hearing. Previously, the defense had requested an extended adjournment to accommodate Fusika’s travel, but the court denied this request. DSS counsel Akinlolu Kehinde argued that Sowore had already requested ten prior adjournments and was attempting to stall the proceedings.
Highlighting the requirements for an accelerated trial under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Justice Umar rejected further delays. With Sowore present in court but lacking legal representation, the judge set a firm date of July 22 for the resumption of the defense. Failure to appear or proceed on this date may result in the defense being foreclosed.
