Nigerian Government Concludes Repatriation of 1,490 Citizens from South Africa

Following a series of xenophobic incidents, the Federal Government has finished transporting 1,490 Nigerians back home from South Africa via specialized humanitarian flights.

The Nigerian government has finalized the return of 1,490 citizens from South Africa amidst ongoing xenophobic violence and security threats targeting foreigners. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the conclusion of the operation on Wednesday.

The effort reached its end when the final Air Peace humanitarian flight touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos with 305 passengers. This final group departed from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, accompanied by three government representatives tasked with oversight.

This massive rescue operation was made possible by a partnership with Air Peace Limited and South African Airways. The ministry emphasized that these flights were a direct response to attacks against foreign nationals. Looking forward, the government intends to utilize diplomatic channels to ensure the safety and harmony of Nigerians currently living in South Africa. Officials also urged citizens abroad to remain in contact with embassies and strictly follow the laws of their host nations to facilitate quicker assistance if problems occur.
