Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, has declared that the well-being of judicial personnel is an essential requirement for a functional judiciary rather than a luxury. Speaking at the inauguration of a 20-unit housing complex for judges in Abuja, he emphasized that superior living standards are critical for maintaining judicial impartiality and efficiency.
Completed in under two years, the housing project was lauded by Justice Baba-Yusuf as a sign of proactive governance. He noted that the initiative directly addresses the need to protect the dignity of the bench and alleviate the stresses caused by substandard housing and inadequate post-retirement benefits.
The Chief Judge highlighted that constitutional protections alone cannot secure judicial independence. He asserted that robust infrastructure and proper support systems are necessary for judges to carry out their duties with courage and fairness. He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for their roles in advancing these infrastructure improvements.
Looking ahead, Justice Baba-Yusuf requested that the FCT Minister consider expanding such housing initiatives to include the Sharia Court of Appeal and the Customary Court of Appeal. He affirmed that despite the rising workload in the expanding capital, the judiciary remains dedicated to the rule of law and the impartial administration of justice.
