President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that his government will prioritize engineering standards and public safety for all national infrastructure projects. Represented by Minister of Works David Umahi at the 34th COREN Engineering Assembly in Abuja, the President emphasized that human life outweighs the value of any physical structure.
The event focused on enhancing safety through better regulation and a new system of penalties for non-compliance. Tinubu clarified that these measures are intended to restore public trust in the engineering sector rather than target specific individuals. He also reiterated his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, which includes four major Legacy Road Projects aimed at fostering economic growth and national connectivity.
Minister Umahi echoed these sentiments, noting that engineering mistakes carry irreversible consequences compared to other professions. He urged site engineers to maintain professional integrity despite external pressures. The assembly also featured insights from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Rafiu Adeladan, and representatives of Aliko Dangote, who stressed that high-quality outcomes rely on rigid compliance.
COREN President, Engr. Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, revealed that the organization has implemented digital verification to combat fraudulent practices. The assembly concluded with a unified pledge to increase regulatory oversight to ensure the delivery of durable and secure public infrastructure across Nigeria.
