A Sydney childcare employee, 35-year-old Hamish Tait, has been identified following the lifting of a court suppression order. Tait faces 329 charges related to the alleged abuse of 136 children across five different facilities over a span of 16 years. He has been in custody since his initial arrest in July of last year.
The extensive list of charges includes 162 counts of producing child abuse material, 81 counts of filming individuals in private acts without permission, 22 counts of aggravated use of children under 14 for abuse material, and 18 counts of sexually touching a child under 10. Authorities launched an investigation after connecting Tait to illegal internet activity in June 2024, subsequently discovering illicit materials on devices at his Glossodia residence.
Acting Commander Luke Needham of the Australian Federal Police condemned the alleged actions, noting the gravity of betrayal regarding a trusted care provider. While investigators have successfully reached 121 families linked to the case, they are still working to identify another 22 potential victims. Tait reportedly worked at 62 early childhood centers between 2009 and 2025, primarily in the north-west region of Sydney.
Police have established a dedicated website to provide information about the affected centers and offer support to impacted families. This case follows several high-profile childcare abuse investigations across Australia, including those involving Ashley Paul Griffith and Joshua Dale Brown, which have heightened public concern regarding safety in early childhood education settings.
